Australian Citizenship
There are several different ways to become a citizen of Australia. The most common ways are by conferral or by descent.
Eligibility criteria
To become an Australian citizen, you must meet specific criteria that includes the following items.
Residency requirement
You must be a permanent resident of Australia and have lived in Australia for at least 4 years, including at least 12 months as a permanent resident.
Citizenship test
You must pass the Australian citizenship test. The test is conducted in the offices of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA). You will receive an appointment letter for the date of your test.
Good character
You must show that you are of good character, which usually involves passing a background check.
